English: L. Or 6547 a-d is a four-volume copy comprising 43 cantos (408 pp., 401 pp., 372 pp. and 429 pp.) of the Babad Dipanagara, Manado version, now in the Leiden University Library (UBL).

This copy belonged to Dr. Godard Arend Johannes Hazeu (born Amsterdam 28 August 1870-died Wassenaar, 2 December 1929), Adviser for Native Affairs (Adviseur voor Inlandsch Zaken, in office, 1904-1912, 1916-1920) in the Netherlands Indies Government and later Professor of Javanese at Leiden University (1921-28). From 1922-27, he was the doctoral supervisor of Professor C.C.Berg (1899-1990), who later advised the nationalist leader and public intellectual, Mr (Meester-in-de-rechten) Muhammad Yamin (1903-62), on the revision of his biography of Prince Diponegoro originally published in June 1945 during the Japanese military occupation (1942-45). Hazeu's copy was bequeathed to Leiden UB after his death on 2 December 1929. It is a copy of the autobiographical chronicle (babad) dictated by the Prince himself in exile in Manado between 20 May 1831 and 3 February 1832 to an amanuensis, who penned the original text in pégon (Javanese written in Arabic script). This amanuensis was either the religious scholar (ulama), Satruno (Wongsotruno), or the Dutch spy and former Demang (district tax collector) of Grabag in northern Kedu, Tirtodrono (Tirtodirono), most likely the latter. Both Satruno and Tirtodrono were part of Kiai Mojo's entourage in Tonsea Lama (post-1831, in Tondano), Minahassa (Sulawesi Utara), and were transferred for a time to accompany Diponegoro in Fort Nieuw Amsterdam in Manado (1830-33), assisting him with his religious duties during the fasting month of February-March 1831 (in the case of Satruno) and with his writing and correspondence (in the case of Tirtodrono). Both knew how to write in pégon.

In 1,150 folio pages in the original MS., Diponegoro tells the history of Java from the fall of Majapahit (circa 1527) to the Peace of Giyanti (13 February 1755), one third of the work, and the period of his own life and times from his birth in the Yogyakarta keraton on 11 November, 1785 to his exile voyage to Manado on 3 May-12 June 1830, which constitutes the remaining two thirds of the work. No original manuscript of this babad is now extant, but in 1866-67 the Dutch scholar, Abraham Benjamin Cohen Stuart (1825-1876), tasked his scribe, Raden Abdul Samsi, with making a series of copies of the manuscript owned by Diponegoro’s descendants who were living in Makassar. This family manuscript may well have been the original, as it was written in a script which was widely used amongst the more self-consciously religious circles in Java and favoured by Diponegoro himself, who, as an autodidact, was only literate in aksara Jawa and wrote in a very careless hand. But there is no means of checking its authenticity as it has now apparently been lost. The first copy made by Cohen Stuart, also in pégon script (BG 282), and various other copies in Javanese script are, however, in the collection of the Perpustakaan Nasional (Indonesian National Library) in Jakarta. It's from one of these copies, probably BG283 (an aksara Jawa version) that Hazeu's four-volume manuscript derrives.

Unfortunately, the pégon copy, which is probably the most accurate for purposes of historical research, has been allowed to deteriorate so badly - the iron from the ink used for the copying has bitten through the Dutch Government paper used for the copy in many places - that many pages are now illegible and its use for students is strictly limited.
